This is money!!
Great stuff!
when your contacting the impact bag, the straightening appears to happen later compared to the last example when you say it has to happen "right here" where you strsighten back towards the camera. Is that to over exaggerate the feeling?
Don’t over think all of this. I’m using a shaft without a head when hitting the impact bag with one hand. The timing of the throw is definitely unique like a signature but I’d hazard to guess that most release way too late in an attempt to “lag”
@@CraigHocknullGolf That makes sense, thank you.

Hi Craig. Great content as usual :) So as a rule of thumb, can you say that the wedge gets thrown at the seam of your trousers - and the longer the club, the more you throw behind the seam? Thanks, Peter
Yes, I think you can think of it that way. If you throwing it with a wedge, it will be later in the downswing and longer clubs will be much earlier and deeper behind you. I did a video on this with my Saber at Twin Dolphin in Cabo San Lucas. It would’ve been posted in January or February 2022.

People are trying so hard to hand the hands forward at the impact. They forget to swing the clubhead.
Yes, probably. There’s so much talk and focus on the impact position. But impact is not a position it just what happens when you fully release energy into the ball on the ground. There really is only one position in golf and that is address. And even that is not static. There should still be subtle movements, taking place all the way until the backswing starts.
Wish i could have seen what actually was happening 🧐
You won’t learn anything from 30 seconds. You should watch the full video.
This right here. I pay attention to water spots on the green where they run off when I'm putting.
It really has the best way to do it!
Hi Craig I know this is an old video so hopefully you'll see this and respond. What is your take on 1 length golf clubs? Seeing this video reminds me of longer clubs for the shorter 8-pw in that niche. Which to me warps my mind lol. Anyway I started digesting some of your videos and it really helped me out! I used to be a handle dragger and searching for "lag" and compressed shots. I've played that way for many years with great results and terrible ones. So i decided this year i needed to get consistent. I started releasing the club way early in my downswing. Huge difference!! I can finally hit the long clubs way more consistently now. Mid and short clubs are dang good too. Thanks to your videos! If by chance you get to Minnesota I'd definitely take a lesson from you.
Thanks for the kind words! I tried the single LENGTH irons because I liked the theory but the application was lacking because the ball flights and distances were way off. However in my irons from 4 iron to 9 iron I almost have singe LIE angle irons. This way my swing plane is more similar on every iron with having the other issues. Glad I could help and if you need online coaching here is a link for you! Here is how you can start doing online lessons with me ua-cam.com/video/R5CYojqzI0Q/v-deo.html
Craig is there a certain brand of club and or a way to determine the club lie angle for you swing method, I just broke my 6 iron and need to get it fixed or replaced
Everyone is unique. There is not one brand or a specific method. I would say try and replace the club or get it fixed so it matches your current set. Then the next step would be to actually get a lesson or club fitting so that I could make the proper recommendation.
@@CraigHocknullGolf Craig I will get it fixed for now, and see about a club fitting, Is there anything I would need to tell them based on you swing method , I noticed you change club angles

Do you think the recoil 110s have a similar profile to the modus 120 or project x LZ? Also were you using the prototype or standard recoil ?
I used the original project x 6.5 when it was made by Rifle not true temper, for 10 years. When I switched to recoils I was playing on the Korn Ferry Tour and tried several models. I’m currently using Recoil 110 F4 tipped but I’ve been told that I’ll have to switch to something else soon. I haven’t really hit any other shafts for the last 10 years so I don’t really have a comparison but on occasion I’ll hit a friends clubs and it always feels like I’m working too hard. Hope this helps!
@@CraigHocknullGolf thanks !
You need shaft lean. It's not debatable. Left arm controls the shaft...right is passive.
This is not at all and accurate statement and it is debatable. What you are describing is a preference. What I am describing is a preference. There are many different feels and forms to pitch shots well. I have and continue to play at the highest level and believe that my technique holds up under tournament pressure and is also complementary to natural and simple bio mechanical movements.
you really have a unique teaching method and point of view coach ... love it
Thank you so much! As you well know by now, I only try to teach through two different filters. Does it hold up under tournament pressure and is it healthy bio mechanically for your body. I would like to think that I only teach techniques that actually work. I couldn’t care less what the trending maneuver is of the week. Thank you so much!
@@CraigHocknullGolf Exactly how i try to teach as well .. if it cant be learned easily by a student without having to do 1000's of reps ( which we both know they will never have the time to do ) then they'll never improve... just finished 5 lessons in row …keep up the good fight !
Where do you teach?
@@CraigHocknullGolf I'm at a range here in Toronto ( Canuck here ☺)
Great eh! I’m a PGA of Canada member as well as US and Australian.
Most likely the best explanation of arm mechanics or natural downswing motion I’ve ever seen, heard. Now, knowing , is not always believing. But Craig should know..Guess the local pro at Golf Tech would dispute the 3 D interpretation of this video… almost too good to be true. 😊
Thank you! I only filter my methods through two filters. Is it healthy for your body and therefore bio mechanically sounds and does it hold up under tournament pressure! I’d say winning tournaments at age 49 against those younger and stronger is a good validation! Cheers!
Hi Craig, So you extend all clubs + add weight to the heads (without counter balance in the grips I imagine). Seems like you don't care about the original swing weight at all? Watched a bunch of your videos and fitting has been one of the topics I find interesting. I'm 6 foot, so from what I have seen in some of your videos where you guide your students - I should extend my clubs about 1.5-2 inches from standard. Is this a correct observation? If it is I imagine I also have to make the lie angles flatter? Last but not least: If the shafts are extended then they will get softer, so do you go stiffer before you extend the shafts to meet the original stiffness from the standard lenght? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks, Peter
I don’t extend everyone’s clubs I sometimes make them or order them shorter. If sound biomechanics are hindered by the equipment it’s a quick and easy fix and gets my students capable of making better swings without having to compensate and develop poor manipulations. As far as weight. “Swing Weight” is just a measurement like grams or OZ’s. It’s a scale that was developed to help club builders achieve a balance. That being said most people who require longer clubs for better biomechanics are bigger and stronger and really like the added swing weight. In terms of actual weight added it’s only a few grams. On occasion I have lightened heads and I have also made heads heavier. My goal is to help my students play their best golf and I don’t have any interest in complying with traditional / archaic theories on what’s acceptable. If you just follow the money you will find that golfers who are tall, short, over weight, physically challenged etc have been forced to struggle. I am an expert in adaptive club building and club fitting and my students appreciate that outside of the box thinking. It’s mind boggling to me how “traditional mentality” has over powered simple logic and when I share logical solutions with my students they sometimes struggle at first because “that’s not what I was taught / told” by XYZ fitter or builder. But they have all achieved exceptional results with my non traditional methods! Thanks for asking! Hope this helps!
It’s not an exact science but I have worked with those who find me on UA-cam and done custom club work for them. Or advised them on equipment. Here is what I send out to those interested. If you would like to hire Craig via online coaching you can learn how to do this via this UA-cam link. ua-cam.com/video/R5CYojqzI0Q/v-deo.html
@@CraigHocknullGolf Yes I get your point and this is why I asked the question. From what I've seen so far everything you say makes sense. If you can stay taller and more relaxed, the logic tells me that your swing will be more "free" and not cramped up. And if you throw the club on the correct path I guess the added club lenght won't be an issue (after some or several practise sessions). I think I wouldn't mind the added weight - just makes me more aware of where the clubhead is :)
@@CraigHocknullGolf I might at one point :)

Speaking of Mr. Nicklaus, are their any other current PGA Tour pros who swing this way(i.e. Hammer down) ? Thank You.
Basically all tour players have very active arm actions through the down swing. If a players arms were completely passive they could only achieve about 20% of there potential total speed. Just look at all of the amazing para-golfers in the world who can drive over 250 yards with their arms only. It’s not a debate and it’s not complicated but the trendy movement patterns of today’s social media would have you believe that it’s all legs, hips and the arms do nothing. The truth is you have to use your entire body with the correct body parts firing to achieve your full potential.
Shoes are crazy🔥🔥
Tony loves his J’s!
Meh
I know right! Just 🫤
Wrong you are supposed to open and drive your hips first before the downswing

@@BidenIsKinglooks like he was an ex tour pro...so I'll take his advice over some hack 100 plus golfers comment.
Everybody believes you should be doing the trendy way. If you actually did it correctly, there would be so many better golfers on the planet. But it’s OK. You can just come on here and just randomly trash me with some fake profile that you’re hoping people will click on. Clearly I’m not some hacker giving unsolicited advice on the driving range.
Exactly?
Vv interesting! If you hammer down behind yourself, do you coast through impact to release? Everything I’ve read indicates it’s pointless to try to pull the club through after club parallel. Countless videos and instructors on UA-cam call for a handle pulling upwards through impact. Now I’m confused…zzz
The hammer begins the downswing, the throw accelerates the club through impact and the scoop insures accuracy and club face stability. This is very efficient and easy. Slide or shift then lag and roll release is bad and causes extension problems then coaches try to fix with keeping bends or adding quats but they never fix the release issues saying the hands are passive. Your hands are active and a great asset not a liability.
Craig. I need help. Please help me because I'm extremely struggling to understand the swing. I have what is called a scooping motion with my shaft leaning backwards at times, and my low-point is either behind the ball or juuuust on the ball creating a lot of fat shots, thin shots and straight up misses and tops. Oh, and the occasional high-right pop up iron shots. Can you please look at my swing face-on and tell me what is going on with me? I would think that my hands are a bit too far behind me whilst i'm making impact and they should be higher. But I'm just so confused here because of what you teach-- I'm not sure anymore. All I know is that I'm extremely unhappy to see my impact position. may I email you or can you please offer me some sort of help
I have an online coaching program. Here is the link to learn more. ua-cam.com/video/R5CYojqzI0Q/v-deo.html Also to clarify, you are not confused because of what I teach since I haven’t taught you yet, but you may be confused because you see what appears to be an early release or scoop in your swing and that is what I am saying is ok. FYI The root cause of the issues you mentioned will more than likely be because of something contrary to what I in fact teach not because of my teaching. The online swing analysis will help me to identify what the root cause is, no need to be concerned! 👍

Craig, When I am chipping, there are times the ball shoots right, and low. Are you opening your club face on the way back and closing it on the way down. I noticed when I do that, the ball goes straighter
I think what you may be describing is either a heel shank or a toe shank. Many times in short game this is caused by not gripping low enough on your chipping club. Or losing your balance onto your toes. I am not trying to open and close the face that is not a good solution.
Than you Craig, I will try this Great contact Also I have a saber and need to focus on throwing the club (regular shot) I also noticed I have a hard time feeling the weight of the club face due to grip and tension
That makes sense. The timing of the throw is impeded especially if your glove hand grip is too tight.
Makes sense. It’s what I did when I was a kid, then I started listening to the ‘experts’
Yes unfortunately there is a complicated rolling release and a simple scooping release. Both work but the roll is the old and most commonly taught release. I rolled my way to a D1 Full ride and membership to two world recognized tours but have since scooped my way to the best golf of my life to include multiple wins and 6 PGA Tour starts between the age of 42 and 49 and I don’t plan on stopping!

You are welcome!
Harry Vardon's door post ?
Yes I would say that when you leverage angular momentum correctly it’s much easier. The more technology we use the more we realize that the old pros knew what they were talking about!
I've never heard this explanation of how "shaft lean" comes to be.😲
It can be forced into a lean but if it’s released into a lean with a divot that’s the good lean!
@@CraigHocknullGolf I've looked at a bunch of swing sequences, and a lot of famous golfers have their hands ahead of the ball before the clubhead even gets to it. What about that?
@mikeobrien1559 Here are a couple of thoughts for you. How far ahead of the ball is the average pros, wedge, 7 iron and Driver? The wedge may be more like a couple inches, the 7 iron might be a couple inches and the driver may not be at all. So knowing that the handle is ahead by a small margin, how many amateurs have been lead to believe these two things. Is the professional actually attempting to drag and lag the handle into a forward position or is the professional releasing energy powerfully to a point where the handle is slightly ahead of the club head. And is the fact that the handle is ahead because the player is attempting to release the club head down into the ball and ground at such a speed and angle that the handle is slightly ahead. If I pick a ball clean out of a bunker or off of a cart path or off of a tee when using my driver, unlike hitting a wedge am I releasing the club differently or is the handle to club head ratio relative to my intention and also the collision with the ground. The point of my video was not to claim that all pros and all swings should not have the handle in front or leaning. My point is regarding the players intention. Their force and subsequent collision results in some lean but from my experience (40 years competing and 27 years professionally coaching) is that many golfers are attempting to simply pull, shove, drag the handle in front of the ball to achieve lean or the ultimate goal “compression”. Because they are doing it without the proper intention and direction of the club head they inevitably end up in a worse position from having to try and achieve this position. It’s a cart before the horse issue. Hope this helps explain my position.
@@CraigHocknullGolf Thanks for the great response, Craig. I find your description of impact (releasing the clubhead down through the ball and ground), as a behavior, to be a much better way to think about our objective with an iron than the customary "impact position" way of thinking. So, in order for the clubhead to be still descending through the ball and ground, the hands have to be ahead of the ball. The question is, how do we get them there. I agree with you that they get there as the result of something else and that they should not be moved past the ball directly. If we deliberately make pushing the handle past the ball the objective of a swing, we're having the opposite reaction at the other end of the club, the clubhead. By pushing the handle forward, we're actually making the clubhead want to go in the opposite direction from the desired result. We're negating clubhead speed by pushing the handle forward. Instead, what we want do is use the hands to help the clubhead try to outrace the hands to the ball and just miss in succeeding to so. With driver and shaft lean, if one considers the sequences of pros from a level perspective, there is an appearance of less shaft lean than with irons. But, if a line is drawn between the balls and their left shoulders, all their hands are on the target side of that line. That slight..."lag" angle, I believe, is necessary so as not to uncouple the club from the rest of the levers (lead shoulder and whatever weird thing one prefers to do with the lead arm). But, it's the same here. One accomplishes this condition as a result of something else rather than something done directly. Sorry this got so long. My dad was a history teacher and he never taught us "short answer" form.😎
@mikeobrien1559 this all sounds great! I believe each person can key on different body parts to have the intention of leveraging angles etc to create force. However with most people having at least thrown a ball at some point in their life with their dominant hand and that dominant hand being also the direction that they play golf it stands to reason that they can achieve great results throwing the club through the ball and into the ground slightly with that hand and arm as the main force producer. The bad thing about golf is that we can actually play and hit shots at. C minus level without and good mechanics and applications of physics which makes most golfers assume that basically anything goes. However I also believe that there is an A plus approach to all of this which if applied gives us an excellent chance of swinging with efficiency, consistency producing long and accurate shots! You are on the right track. And thanks for your in depth reply. Cheers!
So....... ?
These videos are called remixes. It’s just like a little mini commercial. If you watch the full video that’s linked in this video you’ll see what I’m talking about.
Been all “ Golfy” for far too long. Really appreciate the insight and tour quality information.
Thank you! I try to just keep it real!
Really appreciate you insights and skill - you have mentioned Tom Watson regarding his ball striking. Is it fair that he has his “swing” employs the principles of release and hammer down or cutting weeds thru his body type, swing pace and shot requirement as he perceives it? And trigger finger support of course? So doing the same concepts successfully can be visually quite different😊
Yes he mentioned on a golf channel show, maybe a “lessons from the pros” that this square to scoop release propelled him from good to great!👍
As a beginner golfer, I am really enjoying your insight. Question: Where is the low point of my swing? Where should I be aiming to hit the ball? I'm not sure I fully understand. Sorry if this is a very basic question.
An exercise you can do is make practice swings that leave marks in the grass. Maybe small divots. Just brushing the grass with your practice swing. Then leaving your feet exactly in the same spot reach over and drag a golf ball with your club on top of those scuffs in the grass. Then make your swing and hit the ball. The golf equipment is so well designed that you don’t have to have an exact precise bottom to your swing. You can even hit a little bit of grass on your way to the ball and it will be fine . When you make contact with the grass it will free up your swing and teach you to stay the correct distance from the ball. If you’re having random contact with the ground, it’s more than likely because you’re standing at random distances from the ball. Or your body is moving up and down too much. If you continue to watch the videos that I have on the one hand chipping method that will help you understand how to release the club properly. Hope this helps!
Get the moment of truth impact bag and stand far away and swing at the sweet spot for 30 min a day, it changed my entire swing and game
It’s a great tool!
This is Probably one of the best ways to improve ball striking without trying to fix the swing. Goldilocks method. Humans are designed to Learn and survive using this methodology😊

OK, I’m pretty sure that was a compliment. You’re gonna have to help me with the T and B.
“I wouldn’t even know how to bow my wrist if you told me to” ya… and I bet you wouldn’t know how to cup your wrist if we told you too either, what’s your point? Just because you don’t think about it doesn’t mean it’s not apart of your swing lol
The point is, it’s not something he’s actually thinking about or actually trying to do. Which means the action is a result of something else that he is trying to do. Which is maybe use his right hand a certain way through the swing. I see too many people trying to just simply bow their wrist and they don’t really know why they’re doing it. Maybe instructors are telling them to do it but they have no control. My warning is to players to not simply copy tour players unless they fully understand how it’s gonna benefit them.

Sounds and looks like the swing concept executed by Jack Nicklaus- long swing, long arc and not much divot. Swing with short irons was mini version of Driver motion??? Thanks and appreciate your information and presentations. Nicklaus right hip area seemed pivot point to return elbow and club just released along intended swing path. Hands not holding lag but directing flow not lag or forcing handle forward…
Yes I’ve heard from those who know Mr. Nicklaus that he tried to release the club from the top of the downswing and not wait for more lag.
